WIN 2008 TABLE TENNIS FINAL
Igor Bray and Dmitry Fursa from Theoretical Physics dominated their very first sporting competition and claimed the 2008 Inter-Departmental Table Tennis Title in awesome fashion.
GRAND FINAL RESULTS - Monday 23rd June 2008
The Inter-Departmental Table Tennis Challenge was again well received in 2008 with an impressive 16 teams from 12 different departments joining the competition. Due to the large number of teams, the competition was again split over two days (Monday's and Tuesday's) and teams were split into two groups.
Theoretical Physics dominated Group A remaining undefeated throughout the Round Robin Competition finishing four points clear on top of the leaders board. It was a similar story for Engineering in Group B who also remained undefeated throughout the Round Robin Competition and finished at the top of their ladder. Everyone was expecting these two teams to make the Grand Final but it was the DREam Team who defied all odds to win themselves a spot in the big match after defeating Engineering in the Semi Final 3 frames to 2.
DREam Team's story becomes even more remarkable after joining the competition two weeks into the Round Robin fixtures (at the request of event organisers to even the competition). Sitting in second spot on the ladder before the last round of the regular season, elation nearly turned to dispair when DREam Team came up against bottom placed RC Double. DREam Team only just took the points winning the Doubles 21-18 and in the process just squeezed into the finals. It again came down to their Doubles match in their Semi Final.- with two wins each DREam Team and Engineering put on an awesome specticle with a high scoring 31-29 finish and the fairy tale was almost complete.
Unfortunately the Grand Final however didn't live up to the Semi Final but spectators still witnessed some awesome Table Tennis. Theoretical Physics were never really troubled, easily winning both their finals and the Grand Final 4 frames to 1. It would take an awesome team to beat these guys!!
Congratulations to all teams on another excellent Sports Challenge.
In the Third Place Playoff, Engineering finished their season in style, easily defeating Applied Physics in an entertaining battle, 5 frames to nil. Well Done to both teams on a competitive season.
